Making the decision to remodel your kitchen is a big choice. The average kitchen remodel in our area ranges from $18,000 all the way up to $65,000. The wide range in the price has a lot to do with the choices you make in materials and contractor. There are a lot of big decisions that will need to be made. We’d like to make sure you don’t fall into one of the most common mistakes of kitchen remodeling.
The first mistake is rushing the process. When you decide to remodel, don’t just jump right into it. Make sure you do some research in your area of typical costs for materials such as cabinets and counter tops. Make sure you set a budget and keep it realistic. Expecting a full kitchen remodel for under $10,000 is almost impossible. Make sure you do a full walk through with your contractor and have all of your ideas on the table from the get go. Don’t wait until the last minute to change your mind on something. Setbacks late in the game will only delay the project and cost everyone money. So don’t rush anything and take your time making decisions.
The second mistake homeowners make is getting only one bid from a contractor. You should get at least three estimates so you have a wide range of options to choose from. Also, when you choose, budget is important but the lowest bid may not be the best option. If you liked one contractor over another but their price was higher, paying a little more money for someone you trust is well worth it. Too many times homeowners get stuck with a contractor who quoted the lowest price but gives them sub-par work. Do your research on your contractor and make sure you pick someone you trust.
The third mistake homeowners make is choosing items for their kitchen just because it’s the cool, trendy thing to do. Watching a lot of HGTV is a good idea to get ideas but if you never cook pasta, there’s no need to install a pot filler over your stove. Invest in things that make sense for your family. If you have a large family and need a lot of storage, go for the 42” cabinets and large island that you like, not the smaller cabinets and small island because the host on TV said it’s the trend. If you hate white cabinets, don’t install them. Pick things that you’ll like. Not what the TV says you should put in.
The last mistake that is made by many homeowners is not taking into account how much of a mess there will be. Here at William Snyder Construction we use a HEPA filter to keep dust down to almost nothing on our job sites. That doesn’t mean there won’t still be a mess. Living in a construction zone is stressful and hard for everyone. If at all possible, try to get pets to stay with family or friends and keep small children out of the contractor’s way. No one wants an accident in the remodel zone.
However your kitchen remodel works out, remember that it’s about what you want in the kitchen, not anyone else. Take your time, do your research, pick what you like, stay out of the way and enjoy the finished project once it’s all done. Happy cooking!
